Hawaiian Purple Sweet Potatoes
Did I mention already that I love trying new things? If not, than I’m telling now, I absolutely adore trying new foods. Every time I’m about to take the first bite of something completely new to me, I feel like a kid before Christmas. Hawaiian purple sweet potatoes (also known as Okinawa potatoes) are one of those foods. Honestly I never even knew that anything like this exists until few days ago when I saw them in my favorite grocery store. A lady at the store was giving away samples of baked Hawaiian sweet potato to customers, so I tried a piece. At first I thought it tasted just like a regular sweet potato but after a second I started tasting something different. I find it hard to describe what kind of flavor was it but I would say that it was a bit like caramel and it was slightly sweeter than orange sweet potato. The lady at the store also assured me that it is the healthiest of all of the potatoes, it has the most antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. I loved it. I grabbed two of them and went to the cash register. You can imagine my surprise, when I had to pay 10 bucks for just two large potatoes, but it was worth it. For the purpose of my blog and excitement associated with cooking and tasting brand new food I decided to be a little bit less thrifty than usually. Normally I always look at the price of what I’m buying and I try not to be extravagant with food but this time I made an exception. I decided to simply bake them in the oven. I did not want to damage or overpower their rich taste by boiling them or combining with any other food. Just plain bakes potatoes, that’s the best way to experience their unique taste.
Ingredients:
Hawaiian Purple Sweet Potatoes (as many as you wish)
Sour cream
Preheat the oven to 400°F. Place potatoes on a baking sheet and bake 40-60 min. Check if they’re done by simply pressing them, they will fee soft to touch when ready. Serve with a touch of sour cream, you really won’t need any seasoning or even salt.

Wow, their color is so beautiful. I’ve never had them before. They look great. Thanks for sharing!
Those are beautiful looking. I’m torn between being sad that we don’t have them here, and being glad my food budget isn’t taking a serious hit.
How intriguing! I have never seen purple sweets…I will have to keep my eyes peeled for them!
I made baked sweet potato fries tonight for dinner using regular sweet potatoes. This definitely would have made it more interesting!
I love this purple sweet potatoes. In fact, I used to make into chips back when I was in Indonesia.
These potatoes were also good for making ice cream, pudding or muffin.
Yes they’re very sweet and seem perfect for things like muffins or desserts. I don’t really see them in savory dishes other than ravioli.
beautiful color!
I love okinawan sweet potatoes! they are so delicious, and when they are super super dark purple they are to die for!!
How pretty!
The color is great. Wish I could try some!
I love it when I find new foods to try! These potatoes are so pretty, and they sound scrumptious:)
I used those all the time. I wish I am able to get them fresh more often istead of frozen.
Wow, that’s so funky. I love posting here because I like to see which little monster I am.
I LOVE these! But $10 is way to much for them. Where did you buy them from? I recommend trying farmers market or Asian Grocery stores, like Korean Markets — much more affordable there.
I love these too, and made a sweet potato pie with easy oats crust with them! Check it out on my site if you want to try the recipe.
I’ve never seen those before. Thanks for sharing!
These look great! Earlier today I was talking about cooking some unusual potato dish. These look perfect!
These are the most delicious vegetable food I have had, EVER! In K-Town they sell for $1.29/lb. The small ones are much better and they’re an absolutely treat in chicken soup, dessert in a meal! Yum!!!
I found these in an asian market in Las Vegas for 1.79 a pound. Tonight was the first time I tasted them and they are delicious. I read that they use them in Japan to treat diabetics.
They are becoming more popular, I saw them the other day in Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s (don’t remember exactly which one was it) for 2 something per pound. I can’t believe that I paid so much, not fair
I have got to try those they sound yummy. I wonder if they are as easy to grow as normal sweet potatoes – I left one in a paper bag too long at the back of my pantry (it was there for about 4 months as it had fallen behind a big sack of flour) – and it had developed shoots so I planted it. Who knew that sweet potato grows a vine with lovely flowers? Anyway I know have a permanent sweet potato patch in the corner of my yard. Hopefully I can have a similiar one with these purple beauties!
I’ve been having these on the Big Island for a while. They are amazingly good and many of the farmer’s markets here carry them.
And yes, they are super healthy!
