Fried Green Tomatoes

Fried green tomatoes are one of those foods you have to try to satisfy curiosity. They are Southern specialty and if you happen to be in any of the Southern states you must give them a try, you won’t be disappointed. Crunchy on the outside with soft, almost melt in your mouth middle. Just make sure to buy really green, unripe tomatoes since they are firmer and won’t get mushy while frying.

Ingredients:

4 green tomatoes
1 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup milk or buttermilk
1/2 Tbsp garlic powder
1 tsp black pepper
Salt
Oil for frying

Slice tomatoes about 1/2 in width. Arrange them on a baking sheet, sprinkle with salt and let rest for 15 min so they can get rid of some juices.

Pour milk or buttermilk to a bowl. In another bowl mix together cornmeal, garlic powder and pepper.

Dip each tomato slice in milk and cornmeal mixture until fully covered.

Fry in skillet on both sides until golden brown.

Serve with ranch or spicy mayo.

Haahaa! I think your right, I’ve been wanting to try them out of sheer curiosity. I’ve held back because I honestly don’t care for fried foods and I have a serious fear of popping grease. However, I just saw some beautiful green tomaatoes at the market and thought about braving it to make fried green tomatoes. I’ll have to pick some up tomorow.

It really is one of those “curiosity” foods, like fried pickles (which I LOVED) can’t wait to try this recipe out

Agree, I also tried fried pickles and it also was a curiosity thing. They were really good, very interesting taste and I just had to try them even though everyone by the table looked at me like I’m weird or something, eating fried pickles :P
